Now in its 18th year, Sani Festival is a remarkable celebration of world and classical music, bringing together a truly varied mix of performers and an inspiring programme of events.
Drawing an audience from far afield, the Sani Festival stage is set in the spectacular open-air surroundings of the natural amphitheatre on Sani Hill – a perfect backdrop for some of the most acclaimed performers that Greece and the world has to offer. Taking place in July and August, the Festival crosses many borders both musically and geographically. Featuring world-class jazz, classical as well as ethnic and folk music, it never ceases to delight festival regulars.

The sound of summer
Every year the Sani Festival comes up with something new, something to push the boundaries of our musical experience. The results have been dependably thrilling. Olga Tabouri-Babali, artistic director of the Festival since 1996, describes the event as ‘a continuing exploration of the role of the artist in an ever-shifting cultural landscape. In this context, we are prepared to be more adventurous, to embrace the unknown…’ Last year’s innovation was a tribute to important jazz record levels, starting with the German label ECM, which achieved international distinction for the high quality of its recordings, and we shall be continuing the theme this year – again supporting the European jazz scene - with another tribute, this time to another German label, ACT, winner of many awards for its roster of artists.
JAZZ ON THE HILL 2010 – TRIBUTE TO ACT AND ITS MUSICIANS
The ACT label was born in the early 1990’s, reflecting the desire of founder Siggi Loch to carve out a new path in jazz recording. From the very beginning the idea was to follow the example of the great independent labels in America, the companies which created the jazz legend.
The idea came to him when he first saw Sidney Becket performing live in 1955, in Hanover. And almost twenty years later, in Germany – where jazz had always enjoyed enormous popularity – a new jazz legend was born, the ACT label. Two hundred albums later, featuring some of the best-known names in the world of jazz, Loch had achieved his objective: ‘I have two criteria in signing artists’, says the guru of modern jazz. ‘First there are the artists who put the bread on the table, the important, established names, Then there are the performers who people will be talking about in the future. But all of them create music appealing to people with open minds’. Loch’s success has been a source of listening pleasure for millions of jazz lovers.

The second phase of this year’s Festival, Sounds of the World (23-25 July), is dedicated to recent musical developments in Spain, Portugal and Brazil – the latter much influenced by the countries of the Iberian Peninsula. Our guests will be Ceu, Grammy-winning singer and chart success who has delighted audiences and critics, hailed as the ‘future of Brazilian pop music’, and the Portuguese group Deolinda, whose influences include significant artists from their country’s traditional music, from the unforgettable Amalia Rodrigues to Madredeus, performers of the traditional fados – but not in the traditional form. The fados of Deolinda are a compelling mix of positive and negative, a rare musical marriage of jazz, pop and samba, with influences from Havana and the Greek rebetika musicians – a thrilling musical experience, presented to Greek audiences for the very first time in this exclusive live appearance. The Sounds of the World is very happy to present the group Giulia y los Tellarini which wrote the music for Vicky, Christina, Barcelona. The story of the group is one of happy coincidences. Like the moment when the Italian singer Giulia Tellarini walked into the studio of Maik Maier in Barcelona with an accordion in her hand, and made the acquaintance of Maik Alemany, Jens Neumaier and Alejandro Mazzoni, with whom she went on to form the group Giulia y los Tellarini and record the album Eusebio. Second coincidence: a copy of the album falling into the hands of Woody Allen, who fell in love with the music and decided to feature it in his film Vicky, Christina, Barcelona. From there on the only way was up: the group secured a huge audience and their superb compositions are continually winning them adoring new fans.
Perhaps, in the end, the secret of the Sani Festival is the enthusiasm of its organizers, communicated irresistibly to the audience which gathers each year in this unforgettable location in the shadow of a mediaeval tower. The Festival has established itself on the musical map of the country, and in the hearts of all lovers of music and the arts, who make the pilgrimage to Sani each year.

H μαγεία είναι δεδομένη. Γι’ αυτό κάθε χρόνο το Sani Festival επινοεί κάτι νέο,κάτι που να μπορεί να μας ταξιδέψει ακόμα πιο μακριά , ακόμα πιο μουσικά. ΗΌλγα Ταμπουρή-Μπάμπαλη, καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια του Sani Festival από το 1996, ιθύνων νους του καλλιτεχνικού προγράμματος και των θεματικών ενοτήτων του, μιλά γι’ αυτό με πάθος: «To φεστιβάλ είναι για μας μια διαρκής ερώτηση και συνεχής αναζήτηση για το ρόλο των επιλεγμένων καλλιτεχνών σ’ ένα πολιτιστικό τοπίο το οποίο συνεχώς αλλάζει», λέει. «Σ’ αυτό το πλαίσιο, μας γεννάται μια διάθεση να παίρνουμε όλο και μεγαλύτερα ρίσκα, να αγκαλιάζουμε το άγνωστο …». Κάπως έτσι οδηγήθηκε στην ιδέα τωναφιερωμάτων σε σπουδαία jazz labels, αρχής γενομένης το 2006 μ’ αυτό στη γερμανική ECM, η οποία διακρίθηκε παγκοσμίως για την υψηλή ποιότητα των μουσικών της εκδόσεων, ενώ φέτος, πιστή στην προσπάθεια στήριξης της αξιόλογης ευρωπαϊκής σκηνής της τζαζ , ετοιμάζει αντίστοιχο αφιέρωμα στην έταιρη γερμανική δισκογραφική, την ACT, που έχει διακριθεί και βραβευθεί για το roster της.
JAZZ ON THE HILL 2010 – ΑΦΙΕΡΩΜΑ ΣΤΟΥΣ ΚΑΛΛΙΤΕΧΝΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΑCT
Με την επιθυμία να χαράξει ένα νέο δρόμο στη λεωφόρο της τζαζ, ο Siggi Loch δημιούργησε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’90 την ACT, κάνοντας ξεκάθαρο από την αρχή πως σκοπός του ήταν να ακολουθήσει το παράδειγμα των μεγάλων ανεξάρτητων labels της Αμερικής, που έκαναν την τζαζ μύθο.Η ιδέα του γεννήθηκε όταν είδε για πρώτη φορά live τον Sidney Becket, το 1955 στο Ανόβερο. Σχεδόν είκοσι χρόνια αργότερα, στη Γερμανία, που η τζαζ ήταν πάντα μεγάλη αγαπημένη, ένας νέος τζαζ θρύλος γεννήθηκε με το όνομα τηςεταιρείας του . Διακόσιες κυκλοφορίες μετά, με μερικά από τα σημαντικότερα ονόματα στον κόσμο, ο στόχος του Loch έχει επιτευχθεί: «Επιλέγω με δυο κριτήρια», εξηγεί ο γκουρού της νέας τζαζ. «Το ένα είναι καλλιτέχνες πουαποτελούν βούτυρο στο ψωμί μας, οι σπουδαίοι δημιουργοί, και το άλλο ονόματα που ο κόσμος θα μιλά γι’ αυτά στο μέλλον. Είναι όλες μουσικές που ακούγονται από ανθρώπους με ανοιχτά μάτια και αυτιά και, κυρίως, μυαλό». Κι αν για τον ίδιο αυτό είναι ευτυχία, για τους εκατομμύρια ακροατές των επιλογών του είναι αληθινή τύχη. Η δεύτερη θεματική ενότητα του Sani Festival, Sounds of the World, (23-25 Ioυλίου) είναι αφιερωμένη στη νέα μουσική σκηνή της Ισπανίας, της Πορτογαλίας αλλά και της Βραζιλίας, όπως αυτή επηρεάστηκε από τις χώρες της Ιβηρικής Χερσονήσου. Σ’ αυτό το πλαίσιο, το φεστιβάλ υποδέχεται την Ceu, τραγουδίστρια των Grammys και των υψηλών θέσεων στα charts, που αιχμαλώτισε κοινό και κριτικούς, οι οποίοι την έχουν χαρακτηρίσει «το μέλλον της βραζιλιάνικης ποπ μουσικής», και το πορτογαλλικό γκρουπ Deolinda, με μουσικές επιρροές από όλους τους σημαντικούς καλλιτένες της παραδοσιακής μουσικής της χώρας, από την αλησμόνητη Amalia Rodrigues μέχρι τους Madredeus, οι οποίοι τραγουδούν fados, όχι όμως στην κλασική τους μορφή:Τα fados των Deolinda βρίσκουν το θετικό μέσα στα αρνητικά, έχουν χρώμα και διάθεση, αποτελούν ένα σπάνιο μουσικό μείγμα τζαζ, ποπ, σάμπα,χαβανέζικων ήχων αλλά και ρεμπέτικου, μια εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα μουσική πρόταση που συστήνονται για πρώτη φορά ζωντανά στο ελληνικό κοινό σε μια και μόνη αποκλειστική εμφάνιση.Tην ενότητα Sounds of the World αγκαλιάζουν οι Giulia y los Tellarini, τοσυγκρότημα που συνέθεσε τη μουσική για την ταινία «Vicky ChristinaBarcelona» του Woody Allen και το οποίο θα μεταφέρει τους ονειρικούς τουήχους στη σκηνή του Sani Festival, στο Λόφο της Σάνης, στις 25 Ιουλίου. Η ιστορία των Giulia y los Tellarini είναι γραμμένη με τυχερές συμπτώσεις, όπως η στιγμή που η Ιταλίδα τραγουδίστρια Giulia Telarini πήγε στο studio του MaikMaier με ένα ακορντεόν στο χέρι και έμελε να γνωρίσει τον Maik Alemany, τονJens Neumaier και τον Alejandro Mazzoni - τα τρία άτομα του γκρουπ Giulialos Tellarini. Τη συνεργασία τους ακολούθησε το υπέροχο άλμπουμ «Eusebio»που συμπτωματικά έπεσε στα χέρια του Woody Allen ο οποίος αγάπησε τη μουσική του γκρουπ. Επέλεξε το τραγούδι «Barcelona» για μουσικό θέμα τηςταινίας του, ενώ το «La Ley Del Retiro» είχε επιλεγεί να την χαρακτηρίσει. ΟιGiulia y los Tellarini μένουν πιστοί στα μουσικά μονοπάτια που χάραξαν με το «Eusebio» και με τη βοήθεια φίλων και μουσικών συντρόφων συνεχίζουν να παράγουν ακαταμάχητες μουσικές.
Ίσως, τελικά, να είναι η ίδια η διάθεση των διοργανωτών το μυστικό συστατικό του Sani Festival, που μεταδίδεται αναπόφευκτα στο κοινό του, κατά τη διάρκειααυτής της ετήσιας γιορτής πάνω σε ένα λόφο , δίπλα σε ένα μεσαιωνικό κάστρο, σε μια ξεχωριστή τοποθεσία. Αλλά όχι μόνο σε μία: στην καρδιά του μουσικού χάρτη της χώρας, και στις καρδιές των φίλων της μουσικής και τωντεχνών που, χρόνια τώρα, παρακολουθούν με ενθουσιασμό τις εκδηλώσειςτου.
