The Athens Academy building
The finest neoclassical building in the world
The Athens Academy building, which is part of the so-called Neoclassical Trilogy of Athens (Academy – University – Library), was designed by the architect Theophilus Hansen in 1859 and was completed by Ernst Ziller in 1887. The building is clearly based on 5th century architecture style as dominated by marble, with Ionic columns and a pediment up front. Facade sculptures were created by the sculptor L. Drossos, the engraved compositions were created by Fr. Melnitski and the internal wall paintings were created by K. Gkripenkerl. The building construction was funded by the great benefactor Baron Simon Sina. According to the experts, it is the most beautiful neoclassical building in the world.

Το κτίριο της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών που αποτελεί μέρος της λεγόμενης Νεοκλασικής Τριλογίας της Αθήνας (Ακαδημία – Πανεπιστήμιο – Βιβλιοθήκη) σχεδιάστηκε από τον αρχιτέκτονα Θεόφιλο Χάνσεν το 1859 και ολοκληρώθηκε από τον Ερνέστο Τσίλλερ το 1887. Το κτίριο, στο οποίο κυριαρχεί το μάρμαρο, βασίζεται σε στοιχεία της αρχιτεκτονικής του 5ου π.χ. αιώνα με κίονες ιωνικού ρυθμού και αέτωμα στην πρόσοψη. Τα γλυπτά της προσόψεως είναι έργα του γλύπτη Λ. Δρόση, οι ανάγλυφες συνθέσεις είναι του Φρ. Μελνίτσκι και οι εσωτερικές τοιχογραφίες είναι του Κ. Γκρίπενκερλ. Το κτίριο κατασκευάστηκε χάρη σε δωρεά του μεγάλου ευεργέτη Βαρόνου Σίμωνα Σίνα. Κατά τη γνώμη των ειδικών, είναι το ωραιότερο νεοκλασικό οικοδόμημα του κόσμου.
