Xstrata Greek Festival
Xstrata Greek Festival was held at Riverway Park Townsville, Australia, on 10th and 11th October. It was the 10th anniversary of the Greek festival.
There was a variety of both traditional and modern Greek music and dance. The Hellenic Dancing School which comprises of several groups numbering up to 80 children performed a wide variety of dances. A visiting group – The Cypriot Community Dancers of Melbourne also performed a wonderful display of dances. Popular singer Maria Maroulis of Melbourne together with George Doukas and his band Aegean Groove, who came from Sydney filled Riverway with the sounds and beats of Greece. Master of the bouzouki Telemahos Benetatos entertained the crowds with his enormous talent. Dora the Explorer and her sidekick Boots performed on stage. The popular television character entertained the children who joined in the fun and danced and sang along to her familiar songs. Children had their photos taken with Dora in the park. There were also plenty of competitions eg. Plate smashing challenge, grape stomping, olive spitting and many more with great prizes to be won as well as rides and fireworks. The food marquee was teeming with volunteers cooking a wide variety of food including octopus, souvlakia, yiros, calamari, souzoukakia, revithokefethes and so much more. The sweets tent had a huge selection of Greek sweets. Loukoumathes (honey puffs), cut in the traditional way, were again the most popular of sweets although the demand of baklava would have to come in at a close second. Everything you could imagine could be found in The Agora – all deli items, trinkets, jewelry, fresh potted herbs, toys, imported drinks and much, much more. Master Chef celebrity Geni Papacostas took us on a culinary journey in the openair kitchen, as she demonstrated the art of Greek cooking - entrees, mains and desserts were then given out to the public to sample. There was a photographic exhibition in the Cultural Centre at Riverway called “Our generation, Hellenic culture in the North” which proved popular to young and old. The atmosphere at the festival was fantastic with about 35,000 people attending over the two days. Τhe Greek spirit is alive and thriving in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia . Xstrata Greek Fest next year is planned for 9 and 10 October 2010. We’d love to see you there.
Πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 10 και 11 Οκτωβρίου 2009 το 10 Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ Xstrata Greek Festival στο Riverway Park της Townsville, North Queensland, στην Αυστραλία. Με μεγάλη ποικιλία από παραδοσιακή και μοντέρνα ελληνική μουσική, με χορευτικές εκδηλώσεις στις οποίες χόρεψαν το Ελληνικό Σχολείο Χορού και το Χορευτικό της Κυπριακής Κοινότητας της Μελβούρνης , τελικά παρουσιάστηκε στους επισκέπτες μια μεγάλη γκάμα ελληνικών χορών. Τραγούδησε η δημοφιλής Μαρία Μαρούλη από τη Μελβούρνη και ο Γιώργος Δούκας με το συγκρότημά του Aegean Groove, ενώ με το μπουζούκι του διασκέδασε τα πλήθη ο βιρτουόζος Τηλέμαχος Βενετάτος. Επίσης, παρουσιάστηκε στα παιδιά παράσταση με τη Ντόρα την Εξερευνήτρια και το φίλο της Μπότα, ενώ πραγματοποιήθηκαν και διάφοροι διαγωνισμοί με μεγάλα έπαθλα (πχ σπάσιμο πιάτων, πάτημα σταφυλιών κλπ) και βεβαίως πραγματοποιήθηκε και ρίψη πυροτεχνημάτων. Ακόμα, εθελοντές μαγείρεψαν ελληνικά φαγητά (χταπόδι, σουβλάκια, σουτζουκάκια, ρεβυθοκεφτέδες) και οι λουκουμάδες και ο μπακλαβάς ήταν τα πιο περιζήτητα γλυκά του φεστιβάλ. Τέλος, υπήρχε Έκθεση Φωτογραφίας στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Riverway που είχε ως θέμα «Η γενιά μας, ελληνική κουλτούρα στο Βορρά». Η έκθεση παρουσίασε μεγάλη επισκεψιμότητα. Περίπου 25000 επισκέπτες επισκέφτηκαν το στις δυο μέρες της διάρκειάς του. Έτσι αποδείχτηκε ότι το Ελληνικό Πνεύμα είναι ζωντανό στο Xstrata Greek Festival.Ραντεβού του χρόνου λοιπόν, 9 και 10 Οκτωβρίου 2010!
